Abruzzo with Kids - Family Guide

A family holiday in Abruzzo: suitable beaches, outings by age and practical tips for travelling with children.

Children are welcome everywhere in Italy, and Abruzzo makes things easy for families: short distances, shallow beaches and plenty of nature. This guide sorts the options by the age of your children.

With babies and toddlers

The sandy beaches with shallow water at Vasto Marina, San Salvo Marina and Casalbordino Lido are the easiest. Beach clubs offer shade, toilets and often a changing area. Plan beach time for the morning and late afternoon and spend the hot midday hours indoors.

With primary school children

  • Via Verde: the car-free cycle path right by the sea, with bikes and trailers for hire in the coastal towns.
  • Roccascalegna castle: a fortress on a rock that takes only a few minutes to climb.
  • The animal park at Rocca San Giovanni: good for half a day.
  • Trabocchi: the fishing platforms can be seen up close from the shore.

With older children and teenagers

  • Snorkelling at the pebble and rock beaches between San Vito and Rocca San Giovanni.
  • Walks in the Majella National Park, for example through the gorge at Fara San Martino.
  • The Grotte del Cavallone show cave (open seasonally).
  • Kayaking, paddleboarding and boat trips along the coast.

Staying and eating

A holiday apartment with a kitchen gives you freedom over mealtimes, as restaurants rarely open before 19:30 in the evening. Children can always get a simple pasta, even if it is not on the menu. Pizzerias are the easiest choice in the evening.

Practical points

  • Best time for families: June and September.
  • You need a hire car. Reserve child seats in advance.
  • Every town has a pharmacy (farmacia); Lanciano has paediatricians and a hospital.
