Historisches Lanciano

Lanciano is one of the oldest cities in Abruzzo with a rich history dating back to pre-Roman times. The city was an important trading center and is now world-famous for the Eucharistic Miracle.

Pre-Roman Era (1000-300 BC)

Lanciano was founded by the Frentani, an Italic tribe. The original name 'Anxanum' dates from this period. The strategic hilltop location made the city an important center.

Roman Period (300 BC - 476 AD)

Under Roman rule, Anxanum became a flourishing municipium. The city received Roman citizenship and developed into an important administrative center in the region.

The Eucharistic Miracle (8th Century)

Around 750 AD, the famous Eucharistic Miracle occurred in the Church of San Legonziano: The host transformed into real flesh and the wine into real blood. These relics can still be seen in Lanciano today.

Medieval Golden Age (1000-1500)

In the Middle Ages, Lanciano became the most important fair city in Southern Italy. The famous 'Fiere di Lanciano' attracted merchants from all over Europe, making the city rich and influential.

Renaissance and Modern Era (1500-1900)
